| Yuri Gorbachev was born in Uglovka, Russia (USSR)on December 29, 1948. Gorbachev graduated from Borovichi Ceramics Institute, Leningrad State University Dept. of Philosophy, and Odessa Art College Department of Painting and Graphics, USSR. Established in Russia as a ceramics artist, Gorbachev expanded his energy into painting oil on canvas. Inspired by Karl Faberge and the Byzantine sensibility, he uses unusual techniques derived from his extensive work with ceramics to create colorful, textured canvases in oil and gold. Carey Goldberg, of the New York Times described Gorbachev "Not only is he one of the jolliest Russians ever produced by that long suffering land, but his paintings radiate that same joie de vivre, in rainbows of colors glowing amid lines of gold reminiscent of Russian Orthodox Icons. His subjects include Russian winter landscapes and interiors with fruit and animals as well as mythological figures and overblown beauties of a plumpness still much appreciated in his homeland."
From 1977-1990 Gorbachev enjoyed great success with one-man exhibitions all over the world including Finland, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Italy, Endland, and Scotland.
In 1991, Gorbachev moved to the United States and exhibited in France. This began an explosion of exhibitions throughout the US and continued expansion in other countries such as China, Indonesia, Germany, and Australia.
